Since 1987, Oral Lee Brown has been an inspiring figure in Oakland educational philanthrophy through her foundation and their 7 phases of college support. To date, Mrs. Brown has sponsored the college tuition of 136 local students while also providing an array of programs from academic tutoring to recreational activities. Most recently, the Oral Lee Brown Foundation has adopted the entire 2nd grade class at Brookfield Elementary school, a population of students also served by Super Stars Literacy.
Super Stars Literacy will be honoring Oral Lee Brown for her years of dedicated efforts in support of Oakland students, as well as hosting a panel discussion Navigating the Landscape of Public vs Charter Schools During Challenging Times. What does the future hold for our community?
With the fiscal crisis Oakland Unified School District currently faces, the district is challenged with a re-design of their community of schools. With a goal of providing a quality school in all neighborhoods, many Oaklanders are left wondering what this all means. The growing presence of charter schools and the controversy that seems to follow will likely prove to further complicate the strategic direction of the district.
