Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts.

Guidelines for Tutoring

Volunteer Guidelines

  • Build positive relationships with your students, other volunteers and staff members.
  • Be on time. Be consistent. The kids miss you when you are not here.
  • Greet a student with “hello” and a handshake. This encourages proper interactions between you and the child.
  • Dress comfortably and appropriately for interacting with young children.
  • Be prepared – stay informed of what is expected of you and your students.
  • Be a good listener. Ask questions.
  • Attend volunteer meetings.
  • Notify the Volunteer Coordinator if you will be absent. Try to have someone fill in for you or let your students know you will not be there.
  • Do not be alone in a room with a child (for everyone’s protection).
  • Turn off cell phones and pagers while you are in the classroom. Remember if someone needs to reach you, there is an office cell phone (510-396-0550) they can call.
  • Communicate with parents only through the Group Leader and/or the Project Coordinator.
  • Report anything that the child says that concerns you to the Group Leader or Project Coordinator.
  • Address any questions/concerns about the program to the Group Leader or Project Coordinator.
  • But most of all HAVE FUN!!!
